When I was in eighth grade I learned why the houses in Rajasthan have thick and flat roofs from my Geography book. I could only see a small black and white picture in the corner of the book which did not help me imagine how it looked. But later when I went to Rajasthan I checked out the houses. The houses mostly built in the Rajasthan region are Kutcha houses. Let us understand why they have thick and flat roofs.

Why houses in Rajasthan have thick walls and flat roofs?

The weather in Rajasthan is pretty harsh. During the day the temperature rises to its peak and the heat becomes unbearable and during the night the temperature starts dropping rapidly. To get protected from this type of weather condition the Kutcha houses are made.

The walls of the Kutcha houses are thick and roofs are flat because during the day these houses remain cooler and retain the humidity and at night the houses remain warm. I hope you know the reason behind 'thick walls and flat roofs' now.

The Kutcha houses are made with raw materials such as mud, straw, stones, and wood. These materials are poor conductors of heat so these materials don't get heated up so easily.

I hope you understand now why the houses in Rajasthan have thick and flat roofs.
