In addition to being quite uncomfortable in the summer, humid air worsens asthma symptoms. I have had first-hand experience of this. So I researched a little to know do air conditioners dehumidify

a room or not. The answer I got to this was yes it does dehumidify, but it might not be sufficient.

Will Air Conditioner Dehumidify?

I can tell you that when air conditioners cool the air, they partially dehumidify it. Since cold air cannot store as much moisture as warm air, one of the side effects of cooling the air is a reduction in moisture. Excess moisture gathers in the coil (the section that is located above your boiler) and flows out throughout the AC cycle. Although not as much as a dehumidifier, this does lower humidity levels quite a deal.

But again, does a air conditioner dehumidify? Even though the designs and modes of operation of an AC and dehumidifier are somewhat similar, dehumidifiers and air conditioners are not intended to serve the same purpose.

How Does the AC Dehumidify?

Let me flaunt a little technical knowledge that I have about the working of ACs as dehumidifiers. Air conditioners collect heat and release it outdoors at the condenser using an extremely cold refrigerant. Copper cables and coils that link the two systems allow the refrigerant to cycle. Both the indoor evaporator and the outside condenser have coils.

A large amount of moisture is discharged onto the evaporator coils automatically when the air flows over them because of how cold it gets. This moisture is gathered in a pan underneath the evaporator and exits through the condensate pump or basement drain.

And since air conditioners and dehumidifiers both have copper coils that are loaded with refrigerant, they are comparable, yet there are some significant variations.

I hope now you understand does the AC dehumidify or not.
