Vasai, formerly known as Bassein is a city in the north suburban part of Maharashtra. The Vasai pin code is 401201 which has close proximity with Thane, Mira-Bhayandar, Virar, Nalasopara, and Bhiwandi. Situated on the banks of Ulhas river, Vasai was once a trade center during the British and Portuguese era.
Initially, Vasai was occupied by the Yadavas till late 1317 which was further ruled by the Gujarat Muslim Kings. The name of the city was coined as Vasai seeking inspiration from the Sanskrit word 'vaas' which means residence or place of dwelling. The city of Vasai has witnessed a series of changes in its name starting from 'Bacaim' which was named by the Portuguese which was then changed to Bajipur by the Marathas and Basai by the Muslim rulers and finally Vasai.
