Top Things to do in Virar East

  • Jivdani Mata Mandir funicular ride: Skip the 1,465 steps and take the funicular train from the base of Jivdani hill, just 2 km from Virar station east exit. A return ticket is 250 rupees and the ride takes 5 to 7 minutes. Temple opens 4 AM to 8 PM with a 2 PM to 3 PM break. Avoid Sundays and Navratri days when crowds touch 40,000.
  • Tungareshwar Mahadev trek via Bappa Sitaram Mandir: Take a shared auto from Virar east to Bappa Sitaram Mandir, then walk 3 km uphill through the forest gate to reach Tungareshwar Shiva temple. Entry is 48 rupees, free on Mondays. Monsoon brings the streams and waterfalls alive on the trail. Start before 8 AM to beat the heat and the monkey gangs near the temple.
  • Chinchoti waterfall via Sakwar village: The 100 foot waterfall is around 12 km from Virar east, reachable by auto via Sakwar gaon. Best window is mid-August to early September when the flow is strong but the trail is not dangerously slippery. Always go in a group of 4 or more, the route has poor mobile network in patches.
  • Papadkhandi dam evening walk: Sitting at the foothills of Jivdani hill, this is Virar's biggest water reservoir and turns into a mini waterfall zone in monsoon. Locals come here for sunset around 6 PM. Pair it with your Jivdani darshan since both are within 1 km of each other. No food stalls, carry your own chai and snacks.
  • Virar East station market for fresh fish and vada pav: The subzi and fish mandi right outside the east exit gets fresh stock from Vasai and Arnala fishermen between 7 AM and 10 AM. Try the koliwada prawns and bombil fry at the stalls near the bridge. For evening street food, head to Phulpada lane for misal pav and pav bhaji that pulls people even from Virar West.
